About the Item

In 1770, the Austrian Court painter of the Empress Marie-Therese, M. Van Meyten created this portrait of Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna at age 14, to be sent to the King of France, Louis XV (and perhaps a little for the Dauphin/Crown Prince). She would of course become Marie Antoinette, one of the great beauties, style makers and misunderstood martyrs of all of French history. Her Austrian heritage, unwillingness to give in to court corruption and her befuddled husbands lack of sexual experience doomed her long before the Revolution , which was set in motion by Louis XV long before she made her way From Vienna to Versailles . This unique painting to introduce the eventual bride ( to show her beauty or lack thereof to the eventual groom & the King ) , is an 18th century Engagement Portrait of the young beauty at age 14. The King was charmed by her looks , and most especially her decolletage . This was part of how a marriage contract was agreed upon by the nobility , from the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th centuries . WW1 changed that . This is my favorite portrait of the French Queen . I love the grey powdered hair next to her superb light complexion , her ermine trimmed blue dress is superb and her bearing is nothing if not extraordinarily regal. The original portrait , which is not quite this large , found its way back to Vienna , during or after the French Revolution , and is on display at Shonbrunn Palace , the childhood home of the beheaded Queen. I hired an excellent painter and sometime copyist Daniel Legoute to recreate the painting for me . He used antique canvas and oil paint to paint the portrait. The magnificent Louis XV frame , of sculpted wood and stucco , is gold leafed and was made in the 19th century . it measures 42" x 37 ". The painting alone is quite large at 30.50" x 26.50".
