This piece is by the artist Jesse Don Rasberry. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to California, living in Palm Springs and eventully settling in Lodi, a grape-growing region in San Joaquin County. Later, the family moved to Stockton, where they would remain through Rasberry's adolescence and formative years. Rasberry showed a strong interest in art as a child, inspired by the agricultural landscape of the San Joaquin River Delta. In grade school and high school, Rasberry pursued drafting and drawing and eventually moved to woodworking, with a career in general contracting and home building.
In 1979, Rasberry moved to Texas and in the 1980s commenced a career as a decorative and fine arts dealer. As a dealer, he was exposed to all manner of art, which served to sharpen his eye and provide inspiration for the soon-to-be artist. In the early 1980s, Rasberry started painting, primarily landscapes of Texas and California. He spent time with and drew inspiration from regional artists Bill Warden and Louise Collins.
Essentially self-taught, Rasberry recieved some instruction from the late Bill Warden and on occasion paints with other artists during classes and on plein air painting excursions, as with Ning Hou and Dennis Westerling of Northern California. Rasberry is inspired by the Texas artist Frank Reaugh, Olin Herman Travis, Robert Wood, Porfirio Salinas, and Julian Onderdonk, as well as the California impressionist Maurice Braun.
Rasberry has exhibited his paintings at juried art shows near his studio, such as the Stockton Unitarian Church Art Show and at the Mayor's Art Show in Lathrop, California- at the latter, in April 2008, he recieved the Sponsor's Award. The artist's work can be found in private collections, galleries, fine art events, and major auctions in Texas and California.
Rasberry favors the impressionist style and mainly paints in oil. His favorite compositions capture the intense light and ever-present wildflowers of the California and Texas landscapes. His work is characterized by a bold use of color, heavy impasto, and painterly brushwork. His more stark, modernist compositions show similarities to the work of the late Birger Sandzen; in others, inspiration appears to come from the lyrical, approachable, bluebonnet-filled Texas vistas, captured decades earlier by Porfirio Salinas and Julian Onderdonk.
At present, Jesse Don Rasberry lives with his wife Kala and son Lonny Ray in Northern California. He maintains a studio at his residence where he can often be found painting.
