About the Item

In this 19th century landscape, George Martin Ottinger (1833-1917) has captured an idyllic view of the mountain river stream, City Creek Canyon, as it meanders through the rocky embankment that is lined with fiery red and golden yellow trees of autumn, a looming mountain range hazy in the distance. This romantic realist depiction is Ottigner's signature style. This work serves as a visual counterpart and aid to the many journals extant which detail the crossing of the plains, made by many Americans during the middle of the nineteenth century, and one personally experience by the artist himself. The back of the painted panel is titled "City Creek Canyon, Utah", and signed "G.M. Ottinger, Painter". After years circumnavigating the globe, Ottinger enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to begin his artistic training. In 1861, after having been converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ottinger and his mother travelled in a wagon train from Florence, Nebraska, to Salt Lake City. He continued his artistic pursuits alongside he photographer C.R. Savage, as well as becoming Director of the Waterworks, Adjutant General of the National Guard, and President of the Deseret Academy in 1863. City Creek is a small but historically important mountain stream that flows from city Creek Canyon and across part of Salt Lake city, Utah, and into the Jordan river, which empties into the great Salt Lake. Vanguards of the first mormon Pioneer settlers of Utah camped by the mouth of city Creek Canyon July 22, 1847. Led by Orson Pratt, these settlers diverted the stream to soften the soil and plant crops. In August 1847, the creeks in Salt Lake Valley were named, calling City Creek such because it was in the heart of the city that the pioneers planned.
