About

Louis Siegrist (1899-1989) had a long and illustrious career as an artist starting in the 1920s when he was a member of the San Francisco group of artists known as the "Society of Six". In his later years he became more of an abstract artist and his paintings began to incorporate sand mixed in with the paints, to create a different, courser texture.

In this painting, titled "Del Carmen" he has gone into a "Brutalist" vein. After applying the paint and sand, he has gouged and scratched and dug away at the surface.
