About the Item

An interesting and accomplished oil painting, depicting a seated nude figure, by the highly regarded 20th century British artist Frank Kirby. This is a rare example of the artist's work being offered for sale on the open market. Kirby was not a commercially motivated artist and although some works were sold during his lifetime the majority of his work was retained or sold directly to private collectors. Kirby can be said to have made a genuine contribution to the 20th century British school and this is a fine example of his work, painted with the strong colors and bold confident brush strokes that are typical of Kirby's work. The painting is signed verso. An opportunity to acquire an original painting by an often overlooked modern British artist whose work is sure to become increasingly desirable and sought after as it emerges into the art market. Biography: Frank Kirby was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and was educated at Bootham School York and St. John's College, University of Cambridge, later studying art at the City Literary Institute, London. He lived and worked for the majority of his life in London and later in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. Kirby exhibited his work at London's Southbank Centre and elsewhere. Fellow London artists have variously described Kirby and his work as 'excellent, powerful paintings,' 'a native gift,' 'It was a great privilege to work with him.' Through his work in London, exhibitions and interaction with fellow artists Kirby can be said to have made a genuine contribution to the 20th century British school of art.
