About the Item
This lovely depiction of the painter with his nude model provides an interesting variation on a Classic theme, in this instance placing the artist behind his model, allowing the female nude to gaze directly at the viewer. The painter, Adolf Konrad, was born in Germany and settled in New Jersey, teaching there and producing a series of paintings that were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Whitney Museum and others. Some of Konrad's paintings are suggestive of Edward Hopper's depictions of urban streetscapes, and here, one sees a pair of dilapidated Second Empire rowhouses through the studio window.
