Biography from the Archives of askART This following biography was researched, compiled, and written by Geoffrey K. Fleming, Executive Director, Huntington Museum of Art, Huntington, WV. WILLIAM ERNEST PRATHER (July 8, 1883 – July 9, 1951) A.K.A. “William E. Prather” Figure and still life painter. Born in Avon, New York, the son of Henrietta Richey (1852 – 1927), herself an amateur painter, and Dr. Silas Hancox Prather (1846 – 1909), a professor, school superintendent and minister. Raised in Westfield, New York, William Prather attended Allegheny College in Pennsylvania and studied art in Brooklyn (probably at Pratt Institute). He is also reported as studying at the Arts Students League of New York, National Academy of Design and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. According to newspaper reports he won a first prize for one of his paintings in 1908 in Philadelphia, though the exact location of the exhibition is not currently known. He resided in Manhattan during the first two decades of the twentieth century where he was listed in censuses as either an artist or as a salesman for Charles Scribner’s Sons, the famous book publishing company. By the 1930s he was residing in Providence, Rhode Island where he was employed as a bookseller. In his spare time, he continued to paint, and in 1933 one of his still-life oils was selected for inclusion in the annual exhibition of the Provincetown Art Association. By 1942 he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was employed by the Americana Corporation of Washington, D.C., which was best known for its publication Encyclopedia Americana, the first multivolume encyclopedia published in the United States. His last place of employment was as a salesman for the equally famous Encyclopedia Britannica. William Ernest Prather died of complications related to lung cancer at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia on July 9, 1951, one day after his sixty-eighth birthday. His services were organized by the funeral home of Eugene B. Fleming of Collingdale, Pennsylvania, with burial following in the Westfield Cemetery, located in Westfield, New York. Based upon known examples of his works, Prather was an accomplished figure painter and also painted still life works, though few have ever appeared on the market. Per examples, he signed his works “Wm E. Prather” followed by the year the painting was created. Though there are undoubtedly other exhibitions in which Prather participated, those presently known include the following: Philadelphia Exhibition, Philadelphia, PA, 1908 (prize); Brocton Post Office, Brocton, NY, 1909; Provincetown Art Association, Provincetown, MA, 1933.
