A painting with the initials M L Maxime Lalanne on the lower left side, showing a pastoral scene with shepherds and camponeses gathering erva and palha in the field with wood shavings.
King Fernando of Portugal bestowed the Order of Cristo in Portugal and the Order of Legião de Honra in France upon the French painter François Antoine Maxime Lalanne (1827–1886), a product of the École de Barbizon. has works displayed in various French fields;
The Barbizon School, a movement between 1830 and 1870, included French painters who settled near Barbizon, near the forest of Fontainebleau. In an attitude of open opposition to the current system, they abolished drama, replacing it with realism of observation and respect for the plenitudes of the warm tones of the sky of the Barbizon region
