Beach Scene Oil Painting on Canvas by Theodore “Ted” Turner

About the Item

A very charming beach scene featuring umbrellas, beach chairs, and a lone figure painted by late Virginia based artist Theodore Turner. Ted was perhaps best known for his landscapes, some featuring rolling Virginia hills, or scenes from Virginia beaches. This painting, in its color blocked style, depicts a single bather; a swath of thick impasto pink paint for the back and a dollop of black that is their hair. Framed in an artist-made ash wood floating frame. “Theodore (Ted) Turner was a prolific artist who served as a professor of art at the University of Virginia and Dartmouth College. He studied art in Virginia at Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University) and in New York City, where he received an MFA from New York University. By the end of his life, Turner had become a fixture in Charlottesville: he was a professor at the UVA, had a studio in the popular Belmont neighborhood, and painted scenes from his surrounding community. Highly expressive and typically colorful, Turner’s paintings ranged from soft impressionistic seascapes to impasto abstracts. He utilized an impressive variety of mediums including watercolor, acrylic, block print, found object, and oil. Turner utilized color in unique and untraditional ways that served to enhance some of his more unexpected subject matter. His oeuvre includes a vast variety of subject matter including landscapes, seascapes, nudes, colorful abstracts, portraits, and urban scenes. The frantic and heavy brushstrokes as well as, in his later work, the bawdy words he chose to include in his paintings seem to show us a glimpse of the artist’s personality.” -Via Ken Farmer

  • Large Red and Blue Abstract Painting "Temporary Ephedrine" by John Link
    By John Link
    Located in Greensboro, NC
Dynamic layered blue & red abstract acrylic painting on canvas by the Late Midwestern Artist John Link, mounted in a wood frame. This work, entitled "Temporary Ephedrine", is one of several large Link pieces available exemplifying his technique of richly layering tones of acrylic paint using an alkyd spirit resin. Link detailed this process: “The medium is indeed "acrylic" but not what most people mean by acrylic - which is waterborne acrylic. Instead this is acrylic resin dissolved in turps, with a dash of alkyd resin thrown in to stabilize it so the next layers of paint do not re-dissolve it. Thus it does not muddle up like repeated layers of watercolor can. This stuff does not yellow either, like oil, and a glass of it looks like a glass of water, it is that clear, thus preserving the intensity of the pigment. Also, because it is clear when wet, there is no "pastel effect" like you get with waterborne acrylic, where you must let a glaze dry before you see what you have. It is WYSIWYG to the core." Link (1942 - 2021) was born in Oklahoma City, began his career in Illinois, headed the art dept at Virginia Tech...
