ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
In my paintings I use the violence and romantic sadness of our disappearing natural landscape to provoke a sense of fragility and splendor for the viewer.
I am deeply inspired by the increasing areas of compressed shapes in urban areas and also our increasing need for manufactured landscapes, including parks and hunting lands for hire. Urban development is inevitable and as we squeeze into our natural landscape further and further we desire to recreate it and connect with something real and majestic in a crowded and over stimulated environment. Nostalgic and symbolic, in my images I try to embrace sincerity and ambiguity in times that are hardened by the disintegration of real emotional and literal landscapes. My own abstracted landscapes and imaginary places echo the chaos and beauty of our condensed and fragile relationship to nature and progress. I like to use a variety of images with natural elements that can be seen to comment on the tragedy of lost spaces and yet I also want to convey the brilliance that the small spaces in between show us when the light shines through the cracks.
