Charles Cundall was born in Lancashire and designed pottery for Pilkington while studying at the Manchester School of Art. Subsequently he gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art and, following an injury in World War One, trained at the Slade School. While at the Slade School he was forced to learn to paint with his left hand, having injured his right.
He is perhaps best known as a War Artist and was prolific during World War Two, most famously depicting the retreat from Dunkirk.
Cundall regularly painted Umbria and this farm house scene shows the combination of watercolour and gouache exceptionally well as it creates great depth to the image.
