About the Item

She was a well known Expressionist artist. She was born in 1906 in the town of Lewiston, Montana, and grew up among the cowboy ranchers of the American West. At the age of 17, she began illustrating children's stories for publishers and writers in California. By 18, she had moved to New York to continue to illustrate for children's books and to explore her other artistic talents. Until then, her talent had been all natural, having only a few high school art classes under her belt and her drawing journals as her experience. She took up a career in dancing and so passed half of her life, continuing to paint in her spare time. But her dancing kept her busy and on the move. Then she met her future husband, Harold Findlay, whom she eventually married in 1962, already 56 years old! Settling in California, it is at this time that she again took up painting full time, experimenting with free form expressionism during the 1960's and exhibiting in numerous galleries in New York, Chicago, and throughout Europe. Ever the free-spirited person, she and her husband loved to travel and in 1964, they moved to Alamos,Sonora, Mexico, a significant move for any American to take during that time period. They bought a colonial mansion to live in, which later became her studio and gallery. Considered to be one of the pioneers in American Art in Sonora Mexico, throughout her life she refused to give any kind of interviews to any magazines or other periodicals (including Architectural Digest), so what is known of her is based on travelers to Alamos who talked with her in her gallery. She said she painted to give young people the message that they must enjoy every moment of life and keep themselves occupied. In 2009, she exhibited at the Museo Costumbrista (literary or pictorial interpretation of local everyday life, mannerisms, and customs) in Alamos, Mexico. She painted until her death in 2010 at the age of 104! Acrylic on board. This is from the Estate of Bryan Leslie Judd, who maintained a home there during the 1970s
