About the Item

A still life in oil on masonite by American artist Dorothy Finley (20th Century), produced circa 1950s, depicting a pitcher, goblet and scattered oranges, rendered in the fauvist manner. Markings include the artist's signature to the bottom right corner. Dorothy Finley grew up in Seattle and was educated in California, at Fresno State College. In the late 1940s, she accompanied her Air Force husband to Occupied Japan, where they were housed in Tokyo. Air Force assignments also took the Finleys to Massachusetts, New Jersey, Texas, California, Taiwan and Germany. In Taipei, Taiwan, where she taught oil painting classes, she also arranged a show for American artists at the U.S. Information Services Center. In Texas, when her husband was stationed in Waco, Dorothy Finley worked as assistant to W. McCown, director of Waco Art Forum Museum of Contemporary Art. Mark Meisenholder, Finley and Tomaskevitch were part of a team that at one time “hung the annual shows for the Fallbrook Art Association.” The net proceeds from the sale of her works, to be held during the retrospective, will go to a fund that will be managed by Fallbrook Art Association. Her extensive personal art collection will be offered for sale at a later date, also to benefit the Dorothy Finley Art Association Fund.” A retrospective was held at Brandon Gallery (a cooperative), 2004, in San Diego.
