About the Item

"Astrometry" 2016, by artist James Kennedy, is a large, ten foot plus abstract acrylic painting on an incised eucalyptus masonite panel floating in a white shadow box signed on verso. This extraordinary architectural landscape of spatial elements is built up as flat reliefs using layer upon layer of acrylic polymer, gesso and glaze. The predominant palette of shades of gray, punctuated with slivers of white, black, gold and brick together with flat and mottled planes of color create an expertly crafted and balanced composition while simultaneously possessing rhythmic and lyrical surfaces. "Astrometry," departs from the main thrust of the artist's process where meticulously painted color-fields provide a cohesive topography for shapes and connection, Here, Kennedy plays with a much more visceral background created by media reactions which create an expansive environment in which the spatial characters float. This large scale impeccably executed painting with its striking format, harmonious tones of sophisticated color and visual texture would transform any room from the ordinary to the extraordinary. In James's own words his paintings "address a fascination with essential structures and arrangements whilst exploring the linguistics of music, mathematics, dance and architecture. Pattern recognition and manipulation are common themes, and involve the resolution of space within my own abstract vocabulary, in essence solving spatial equations through paint." The results are ingeniously constructed landscapes of tertiary colors. James Kennedy, was born in Northern Ireland and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy and Rhodec Academy of Design in London where he respectively received BA degrees in Arts and Interior and Architectural Design. He is the recipient of prestigious awards including the Golden Foundation for the Arts Residency, James Bridie Gold Medal awarded by RSA, Brooklyn Artist Gym for best in show Abstract Landscape and the Kiton Art Rising winner in 2010. Selected exhibitions include Dolby Chadwick, San Francisco, Callan Contemporary, New Orleans, John Hartell Gallery, Cornell University, Mindy Solomon, Miami, MMFA, Palm Springs, Ann Loucks Gallery, Chicago, Brooklyn Artists Gym, NY, Surface Library Gallery, East Hampton, Galerie Werner, Pittsburgh, Amy Zook at The Gallery at 200 Lexington Avenue, NY, Arlev Art, Paris and the Royal Dublin Society, The artist's work resides in the corporate and private collections of the British Museum, Corcoran Group, Saatchi +Saatchi, Kneedler-Fauchere, Barbra Barry, Citi Habitats, Sisti Collection, Vivaldi Partners, Dermacare, Mahinder Tak and Edward Albee, just to name a few. His work has also been featured in "Elle Decor", `"New York Spaces" and in the television hit series, "Royal Pains.".
