Extra large oil on canvas 'Villa of the Mysteries' scene of the rituals of the Dionysus, Framed & Unsigned.
Villa dei Misteri or Villa of the Mysteries is a well preserved ruin of a Roman Villa which is located 400 meters northwest of Pompeii, southern Italy, and originally built as a farm in the 2nd Century B.C.
The Villa is named for the paintings in one room of the residence.
This Painting of the original Wall Frescoes (last image) shows the rituals of the Dionysus. it shows a naked women clashing a celebratory cymbal together as part of her dance. The women across her is wearing a fawn skin cloak and an ivy wreath, indicating that she is a follower of Bacchus (God of agriculture and wine), called a Bassarid. The Women facing her is handing over a thryrsus which would signify the successful completion of the rituals and the initiate would be a part of the cult. This women who is known to historians as a "Maenad" holds a thyrsus, a wand of fennel which is covered in ivy vines and leaves and topped with a pine cone as a symbol of their God. This shows a women being whipped at the same time of being comforted by another women.
