About the Item
Harold B. Slingerland was born in Saratoga Springs, New York February 18, 1898. He lived in the Albany area where he studied painting with Edward Byck. He attended Harvard College, Cambridge University, Harvard Law and Albany Law Schools. He became a lawyer and a successful businessman. He lived in Sarasota, Florida from the 1940's until his death in April 1985.
In Florida, he was very active in the art community and exhibited widely. He was a member of the Salmagundi Art Club of New York City that was founded by students from the National Academy of Design and functioned in its early years as a kind of men's club (women were admitted only in 1973). Over the past 125 years, anyone of importance working within the tradition of representation - Ralph Albert Blakelock, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, George Inness, Thomas Moran, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Ehilu Vedder - has been part of the Salmagundi Club.
Slingerland was a member of the Sarasota Art Association, St. Augustine Art Association, Florida Artist Group, Allied Artist of America, Clearwater Art
Association, and the Florida Federation of Art.
He exhibited his portrait paintings in numerous shows including the Audubon Artists, the Florida State University Museum, the Ringling Art Museum in
Sarasota, the Qgunquit Art Center in Maine, Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, the Zanesville Art Institute in Ohio, the Quincy Art Club in Illinois, the Tampa Art Association, the University, the University of Florida at Gainesville, the Montgomery Art Museum in Birmingham, Alabama, Stetson University in Florida, the Carpenter Gallery at Dartmouth College, the National Academy Galleries in New York City and the Norton Gallery in Palm Beach.
Mr. Slingerland received the award of merit at the Florida International Show in Lakeland in 1952 and the Anders Jordan prize in the 1953 Salmagundi Club Exhibition in New York City. Mr. Harold B. Slingerland's agent was W.S. Budsworth and Son, 424 West 52nd Street, New York, New York.
Mr. Harold B. Slingerland was a portrait painter, most of his subjects are female, but there were a few males. He used sitters for his portraits and recorded the names of the sitters on the back of the compositions. His sitters and models were probably friends and neighbors. Since the Ringling Bros. Circus had their winter quarters in Sarasota Springs, he painted a large number of circus performers and some female nudes.
