About the Item

This artwork of the Baroque Flemish School, depicts a still-life scene, theme very typical of the period since they were a way of showing the wealth and power of the of the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. The painting presents a table, possible a kitchen table, where we can see on the right, two living roosters and on the left side, a basket with bunches of graves and quinces and a dead hare whose head falls on the edge of the table. In the lower plan, two dogs with elongated muzzles are represented. The one of the left smells curiously the hare, both forming a diagonal line, frequent in Baroque paintings, the one on the right looks surprised and attentive, as if he’s seeing someone coming in. This pictorial group provides the spectator a meticulous technique, full of details and volumetric forms that gives a third dimensions to the painting. Light also play a key role, helping to create this tangibility. Not signed. Attributed by Dr. Hella Robels to Frans Snyders (1579-1657) and studio. Frans Snyders was one of the 17th century Flemish painters of highest repute known for his still lifes and hunting scenes. Born in Antwerp, he studied under Pieter Brueghel the Younger. In 1608 he made the requisite painter's trip to Italy to view its works of art. The following year he became part of a circle that ultimately included Jacob Jordaens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and Peter Paul Rubens, helping to establish Antwerp as an artistic center. Prized as the finest animal painter of his day, Snyders had a gift for large, well-balanced compositions. His still lifes usually contain a hint of action, such as a sniffing dog, but above all, they allowed Snyders to display his skill at organizing a rich variety of textures, colors, and shapes. In addition to his own energetic hunting scenes and complex still lifes, Snyders was often employed by his close friend Rubens on the still life and animal sections of Rubens's paintings. He died on 19th August 1657 in his hometown, Antwerp. .
