French school XVIIIth century "The children in the park" in the manner of Joseph PIAT Beautiful Grisaille, large oil on canvas. Highly decorative. Dimensions of the canvas : 65 x 86 cm Dimensions with its frame : 73 x 95,5 cm To note : some missings of paint / Visible on the pictures. >> >> PIAT Joseph Sauvage (1744-1818) Flemish Belgian painter, PIAT started working in the family business with his father, a glazier, until the age of 17. At the same time he perfected his technical studies in drawing before joining the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, then under the direction of Martin Joseph GEERAERTS, an expert in grisaille and historical paintings. He then joined the Académie Saint-Luc in Paris and in 1774 produced nine paintings, including the grisaille bas-relief "The Death of Germanicus". In 1783, SAUVAGE was accepted at the Royal Academy of Paris after having painted a well-known painting representing a "Table covered with an embroidered carpet on which are placed: a child's statuette, a helmet, a shield, books, a violin, a bronze vase, a celestial globe, papers and a white scarf". This painting is in the Château de Fontainebleau, which also has other decorative works by this artist, painted above the door. As his fame grew, he was chosen to be the official painter of the Prince of Condé, then of Louis XVI and the royal family. In this capacity, he painted an admirable "Portrait of Marie-Antoinette", medallions of the French royal family and portraits of famous men. He painted the ceiling of the chapel of the castle of Saint-Cloud and decorated the theater of Chantilly (which was razed during the Revolution). From 1804, he painted porcelain figurines for the famous Sèvres porcelain factory. In 1808, he was appointed director of the Academy of Drawing in Tournai. He left his mark on the city by painting "The Seven Sacraments" in the choir of Tournai Cathedral to replace the tapestries stolen by the Jacobins during the Revolution. He died in Tournai in 1818.
