Jaime E. Carret American, 1878-1941 'Beach Scene' Painting in Oil on Panel

About

An exceptional little treasure, this fine scene likely depicts the New Jersey shoreline during the first quarter of the 20th century, as the majority of Jaime Carret’s landscape work captures moments throughout New Jersey and New York. It is a moving look at the colorful Community, though he chose a muted and low-saturation palette for the scene with a heavy emphasis on the deep blue of clear skies. This is set against the distinct neutral of the beach sands, which meld into the waters of the Atlantic and are only barely disturbed by the crowds along the shores. Pink parasails, long pants and white gowns are indicative of a cooler weather, though only hinted at in the dreamy brushstroke. The work is executed on panel, signed lower right “Carret” and is housed in a gorgeous giltwood frame of crisp detail behind a woven linen upholstered matting. Jaime E. Carret was active in New Jersey and New York and became known for his intimate and small scenes of the local coffee district as well as his landscapes. He was unable to attain entry to the National Academy of Design and instead studied painting less formally with a group of National Academy students led by Maurice Sterne and Van Dearing Perrine. They focused mainly on plein-air landscape studies throughout the countryside of New Jersey and New York City and eventually exhibited as a group at the Chicago Institute of Art in 1901. Professionally he led a successful career as a coffee merchant in New York City. His work is quite well developed, characterized by a bold and heavy impasto utilizing a full range of spectrum in his palette, the loose brushstrokes lending a dreamy impressionism to his scenes. His work was represented by Babcock Galleries and Touchstone Galleries in New York City. Literature: "Paintings and Sculpture at the Collection of the National Academy of Design, Volume I: 1826-1925", David Dearinger [Editor], p. 88. Measurements: [frame] 11 7/8” W x 1 3/4” D x 9 7/8” H; [panel] 9 1/8” W x 7 1/8” H.
