About the Item

Lady in landscape. Watercolor. Dedicated and signed in the right area. ARCOS Y MEGALDE, Santiago (Santiago, Chile, 1865- San Sebastián ?, 1912). Watercolor arranged in the shape of a fan country that shows a high mountain landscape contemplated by a woman, who is lying and barefoot in the center of the composition, holding a wooden stick, and staring into the horizon. It is signed and dedicated in the right area (To my dear Angelita / Her good friend / [signature]). Remember other landscapes of this type of European school dated at the end of the 19th century in which nature is overwhelmingly shown, with a human being lost in his contemplation. Santiago Arcos y Megalde was a Chilean painter, illustrator, aguafortista and watercolorist known, mainly, for his portraits and works of mythological theme, although he dealt with other subjects (gender, Catholic religious, etc.). He studied in Spain (he was a student of León Bonnat and Federico de Madrazo) and achieved success, becoming a teacher protected by Queen Elizabeth II. In addition, he expanded his studies and his artistic baggage in Paris (France). His work, recognized with awards such as a Silver Medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1899 or a Third in the National Fine Arts of Spain (1881), is preserved in outstanding private collections around the world and in important institutions such as the Prado Museum in Madrid or the Valencia Institute of Don Juan in the same city. In addition, he made illustrations for books (like the ones he created for an edition of Carmen de Mèrimèe published in Paris in 1884 and recorded by Nargeot)." Size: 73 x 2 x 47 cms.
