About the Item
Painter, one of the leaders of the 'yamato-e' revivalists who flourished toward the end of the Edo period. Studied painting with Tosa Mitsutaka and Tanaka Totsugen, who inspired him to try to revive the classical 'yamato-e' of the Heian and Kamakura periods. Also devoted himself to the study of rites of the court and nobility, seeking to depict accurately the manners and customs of the Heian period.
The following is a work of Yoshino cherry blossoms drawn with the skilled brush strokes
of Kazuesai Ukita .
《Ichiesai Ukita》
A painter from the late Edo period. He is from Kyoto.
His surname was Toyotomi, his first name was Konobu, later he was named Kame, and his given name was Tamegyu.
He studied painting with Mitsutaka Tosa and Togen Tanaka, and worked to revive Yamato-e.
He was also knowledgeable not only in painting but also in Japanese poetry and calligraphy, and was active in national affairs.
He passed away in 1859 at the age of 65.
