The Meadowbrook Polo Club (originally styled as the "Meadow Brook Club"), located in Old Westbury, New York, is the oldest continuously operating polo club in the United States, first established in 1881. Sanford was head of the Hurricanes team, and won that year. He married an actress, went to Cambridge and Yale, and had affair with royalty - eventually relocated to Palm Beach. The British framing label could be from his living in Britain.
Goadby Loew owned a seat on the NY stock exchange and possibly financed the club or the team.
Although unsigned, the painting can be attributed to George Denholm Armour who was a British Artist who painted the polo club so well that he was given honorary membership.
