Montmartre by Noël Givogre, Framed Oil on Masonite
About the Item
French painting, oil on Masonite, depicts people strolling the historic streets of Montmartre at the corner of Place Jean-Baptiste Clémente and Rue Norvins. On the corner is a French bakery. In the background, down Rue Norins, is the dome of the Sacre Coeur. The artist paints the rustic Parisian architecture with the confident strokes and the use of a palette knife. A romantic and important addition to any collection. It is signed "Noël Givogre 73." Painting size is 20" H x 16".
Montmartre has long been a source of inspiration for artists of many kinds. The area perched on a hill on the North side of the cities centre was at one time a place of vineyards and windmills. Then in the late 1800s with the growth of Paris it became a rustic middle class neighbourhood, attracted by students and artists for it’s views of Paris. With its liberal reputation it became a destination for decadence with colorful night clubs and cabarets. It was a popular home and subject matter for many Impressionists and Post Impressionists of the late 19th and early 20th century.
