Lauderdale Beach - Fla.” Signed on the verso “Carl Brandien 1944. The Vagabond Artist” Beautiful Ft. Lauderdale Beach Scene by the iconic NY/Florida artist and world traveler. Carl Brandien (1886-1965), and his wife Kathleen first came to Ft. Lauderdale from New York City in 1941. They loved the area and moved there permanently two weeks before Pearl Harbor. Brandien, who called himself the vagabond artist, traveled with Kathleen around the world on a quest for life, and to discover and paint beauty. Brandien did commercial illustration for many magazines including Life. He opened his Little Studio at 716 E. Las Olas, in Ft. Lauderdale in 1942. The Miami Herald, January 16, 1944, pictured Brandien and his wife. “With inspiration from the war and the fight for democracy, Carl Brandien, America’s ‘Vagabond artist,’ here with his versatile British-born wife, Kay, at their Fort Lauderdale studio, believes that American artists are destined to produce the finest art of all times…Now hanging at the White House is his painting ‘Stars and Stripes’ depicting the U. S. War fleet at anchor in the Hudson, with brilliant display of searchlights against the night sky… ‘I have visited 45 countries over a stretch of 25 years, always seeking to understand the meaning of life and then endeavoring to interpret it through my art.” At the end of World War II Brandien closed his Lauderdale studio and returned to New York and Gloucester, Massachusetts, but couldn't stay away from Florida. The couple returned in 1948. Brandien painted murals for the Friars Club and the Russian Club, in New York City and the Officers Mess Hall...Category

- Lotan Lotan Surreal Painting Signed and Dated 1974, Artist on Top of the WorldBy Lotan LotanLocated in Phoenix, AZSurreal painting in excellent condition by Arizona artist Lotan Lotan. Depicts the artist on top of the world - a self-portrait. Framed. Signed lower right by the artist and dated 1974. Painting measures: 24" H x 20" W. Frame measures: 31 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Lotan Lotan (1905-1985) Little is known about Lotan Lotan prior to 1952 when he arrived in Arizona in an MG accompanied by his girlfriend Ruth and their pet Bulldog, Sir Oliver Cedric. Ruth, who would later become his wife, was also an artist. In a letter that same year to California artist Claude Buck, Lotan claims to be "living in the middle of the desert painting like never before." He goes on to state in the letter the he had recently changed his name to Lotan Lotan because it was part of "losing the past and becoming an entirely new person . . .doing my best to create a new painting as well as a new personality." Lotan evidently had no problem stretching the truth to help create his new persona. During his Arizona years he typically signed his paintings "Lotan Lotan, PHD, MD" even though he was neither a PHD or a Medical Doctor. Throughout his life he claimed to have received degrees in medicine and a PHD in art from the University of Berlin in 1926. In a 1966 interview with The Carefree Enterprise he recounts how he used to operate a medical clinic and a portrait studio side by side in London. "At the same time I was treating the social outcasts of the Soho district, I was also receiving portrait commissions from the royalty and political nobility of Europe and America." He goes on in the interview to state that he did commissioned portraits of King George V of England, President Warren Harding...Category
