Oil on Board, "Yacht Race Off the Coast of France", Circa:1860

About the Item

This eye-catching marine painting depicts a sailboat in a stormy sea, probably during a race off the coast of Brittany or Normandy. The dark, menacing sky is beautifully painted as is the boat itself. The small rowboat in the foreground appears to be warning the sailboat that it is too close to the shore. The painting is done on board, which helps give the picture an excellent patina. The frame appears to be original and is gold leaf and gilt on gesso on wood. The painting is unsigned.
