Abstract Oil Painting by Jose Maria Mijares, Cuban American Artist Offered for sale is an oil painting on canvas by the Cuban American artist Jose Maria Mijares (1921-2004). This large-scale painting dates from the early 1980s. The canvas is stretched on a wood frame, is wired, and ready to hang. Mijares was born in Havana, Cuba in 1936 and died in 2004 in Miami, Florida which became his adopted home after fleeing Cuba in 1968. Mijares began his artistic studies in 1936, at the School of Art of San Alejandro in Havana, where his professors included Romanach, Menocal, and Valderrama. Mijares credited one of his most influential professors, Fidelio Ponce with helping him develop his own style of expression. His first major showing was in 1944, at a national exhibition in Havana's Capitol building. There, he won second prize with a painting titled La Alameda, English translation: The Boulevard. His style at the time was figurative but in the 1950s changed to his signature style, which he referenced as "concrete forms." Mijares taught for 2 years in San Alejandro after his win at the national exhibition. He resigned when Fidel Castro came to power and ultimately left Cuba in 1968, establishing himself in Miami. His geometric style then changed in its new surroundings. "I went back to figurative painting: people and landscapes," he stated. He has exhibited worldwide since the 1940s and even participated in a group show at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris in 1950.
