About the Item

Hungarian original oil on board signed Czene Bela and dated 1976. Bela Czene: Born in Isaszeg, Hungary, July 3, 1911 - died Budapest, Hungary, Nov 9, 1999. A classic yet Modern portrayal of a nude woman seated, mysteriously attractive and alluring. She seduces the viewer into the painting with her Mona Lisa magical gaze as she stares right back. The artists technique is to thickly apply the paints and scratch/ cross hatch the surface of the board, thus creating a textured energy to his work. Czene Bela was educated at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts during the years 1930-1933 and was a pupil of the master Gyula Rudnay at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris. He had been exhibiting since 1932 and continued to be an active, productive and exhibiting artist and painter his entire life, well into his late years in the1990's. Czene regularly exhibited in the Art Hall and the National Salon. After winning a scholarship from the Collegium Hungaricum in Rome at the suggestion of Tibor Gerevich he worked in Rome between the years of 1938 and 1939. It was there that his influence of Roman style was fueled as he further found the direction of the Roman school He became increasingly attached to the Renaissance classical tradition including the art of Leonardo da Vinci and Domenico Ghirlandaio, as well as Greco-Roman traditions. After WW11 this influence waned and the themes of his paintings were drawn with characteristic techniques from everyday life. His art was accompanied by numerous awards: In 1937 he won the Hungarian National Fine Arts Society Award for Youth. In 1942 he received the Ede Ballo prize for his painting "Hunor and Magyar" . In 1943 he was awarded the Ferenc Franz Jóseph Foundation Prize in Capital City Budapest. After the war, in 1948, the prize for the fresco competition of the Ministry of Public Education award. In 1953 he won the Ministry of Folk Culture/Public Education award at the Hungarian Fine Arts Exhibition. His paintings were shown in many solo and selected group exhibitions all over the world as well as in public collections, ie: Hungarian National Gallery, BudapestKanizsa City Gallery. His wife Erzsébet Hikády (1911–2008), his son Gábor Czene (1948–) and his grandson Márta Czene (1982–) are also painters. lifelike, female, photography, drawing, Greek, traditional, bedroom, midcentury.
