Ossy de Perelma "Loading A Houseboat In Winter" Signed Oil on Canvas, 1922
Large French painting by Russian artist Ossy de Perelma depicting three men readying the boat for winter. Signed lower right and dated October 11, 1922. Count Ossip de Perelma (1876 - 1950) was a talented artist and Russian nobleman, who painted portraits of the Russian Czars until 1917 when Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Communist Party, over-threw the czarist aristocracy. Afraid for his life, Perelma went to France and made a living as an artist. France, however, was in the midst of World War I at the time, so Perelma fled to the United States where he attempted to live the life of an artist. While in the United States, Perelma painted a portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt while he served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Perelma's paintings were also displayed in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Perelma traveled widely, returning to France for a short time. He eventually arrived in Sarasota, Florida’s artists’ colony in the fall of 1950. He died shortly thereafter of a heart attack on November 15, 1950.
