Cruise depicts a farmyard scene. A chicken emerges from a farm building, with eight other chickens and a cockerel below. All of the birds are either standing or pecking on the straw pile, as are three other small birds. To the back right of the painting is a wood fence, beyond which is a grass field and woods. The painting is framed in a wide gilt frame. Cruise was a prolific artist who painted a variety of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. He was a member of the Bucks County Academy of Fine Arts and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. His work is represented in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Allentown Art Museum.     The large watercolor picture depicts the Bellerophon sailing out to sea past South Sea Castle off Spithead. Figures can be seen on board. She flies the Blue Ensign, a Union Jack and the Royal Standard. South Sea Castle is to her left and land with a row of houses on the right.
