Pair of huge 18th century Italian oil on canvas church panels exceptional quality These are simply the best artwork I have ever bought. Pair of 18th century oil on canvas panels. They are fabulously detailed, full of history, in great condition, over 200 years old and large sizes. They came directly out of a church in Rome where they were hung above various doors throughout. What drew me to them was the nature of the subject. These were in a church yet they hardly show typical religious images. The theory behind them is that they show two halves of society. The rich and the poor. The top panel with the suit of armour on looks symmetrical but look more closely and you will see the crown is significantly smaller, the weapons are hand use and are basically colored where the other side has a significantly large crown, the weapons are guilt and also show arrows which would have been an expensive commodity of the time. You look even closer and the cannon in the centre bottom the right side has three cannon balls the left has six. The bottom panel slightly more obvious shows various religious items but the left side has lavishly detailed and larger pieces than the right. As for what the significance of the bones are I do not know. But that is exactly what makes these pieces special. The amount of different thoughts they can provoke. The quality of the painting is incredible and the condition overall is very good. A few small split to the top panels right corner and slightly marked finish consistent with age is all. They are oil on thin hessian paper mounted onto a large canvas stretcher. On the top of each panel there is a hand written words saying which part of the church they were from 'Ponte Della Porte Grande' 'Ponta Della Atane Maggiore'. Truly exceptional piece that would look fabulous kept together hung on a large wall. Measurements: Length 191cm (6ft4) x height 71cm.
