Portielje Jan (1829-1908) "The birdcage" / "La cage à oiseaux" Oil on panel, signed lower left Dimensions of the panel : 34 x 26 cm Dimensions with its frame : 50 x 42 cm Artist exhibited in the United States, at the Cincinatti Museum; in Germany, at the Cologne Museum; and in Holland at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. >> Jan (or Jon or even Jean) Frederick Pieter PORTIELJE was born in Amsterdam on April 20, 1829, the tenth of eleven children ! He studied at the Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten, where he was a student of Valentijn Bing and Jan Braet von Überfeldt from 1842 to 1849. In 1851, he went to Paris and began his career as a portraitist. He stayed there several times until 1853, specializing in genre scenes and portraits, especially of elegant women in gardens or luxurious interiors. Some of them were dressed in the orientalist style, in the taste of the time. He also painted many portraits of princely figures in France, Belgium and Holland and had an important clientele in Brussels and Antwerp, where he eventually settled. He also collaborated with other painters, such as Eugène Rémy Maes and Frans Lebret (1820-1909), who provided him with backgrounds and foregrounds for his portraits. His paintings were very successful in the United States and he worked closely with several well-known art dealers, such as Albert D'Huyvetter and his son, originally from Antwerp and based in New York, and the Prinz Brothers of Chicago. He had an important exhibition at the Antwerp International Exhibition (1894), and regularly participated in the Exhibition of Living Masters from 1848 to 1888. He died on February 6, 1908 in Antwerp, at the age of 79.
