Portrait of a Lady, by Fernand Toussaint
About the Item
The creator of this work, the Belgian Fernand Toussaint, was a celebrated painter of still lifes and figuratives. He was born in Brussels in 1873, and entered the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 15. There Toussaint received a strong formal academic training under the tutelage of Jean Portaels; and, in 1891, he moved to Paris to complete his studies. There he met the great Alfred Stevens, a fellow Belgian, who guided Toussaint in formulating his own style. In this regard, it is interesting to note that Stevens was well-known for his graceful portrayals of ladies of fashion. Toussaint's style - as can be seen in the present example - combines elegance and fine draftsmanship with a free handling of paint.
Toussaint exhibited very widely in Brussels. He also showed in the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris, where he received a medal in 1901 and a gold medal in 1929. His winning piece in 1929 was featured in "L' illustration," and also that year, art critic Mario de Marchi called Toussaint "... the undisputed master at capturing the grace and charm of women." Fernand Toussaint died in 1956.
