About the Item

Putting on Stockings. Aleksandr Vasilievich Shevchenko. 1883–1948 painted, circa 1905. signed Verso. Watercolour on paper 10 ½ x 9 inches. Framed size 20 x 17 ½ inches. Shevchenko was a Ukrainian artist born in Kharkov. He started drawing lessons and worked in a theatre design studio from 1890 to 1898. He studied at the Stroganov Institute in Moscow from 1899-1905, and at the Academie Julian in Paris under Carriere from 1905-1906. Shevchenko travelled to England, Spain, Egypt and Turkey in 1906. He then returned to the Stroganov Institute in 1907, before studying at the Moscow College under K. Korovin and V. Serov from 1907-1910. His close association with neo-prim itive painters, including Larionov and Goncharova, led to exhibiting paintings of bathers and soldiers with the group the ‘Donkey’s Tail’ in 1912, and to the publication of his book Neo-Primitivism in 1913, but he also exhibited with the Union of Youth in 1912, the World of Art in 1913, as well as Larionov’s exhibition ‘Mishen’ (Target) in Moscow in 1913 and No.4 in Moscow in 1914. He was amongst the painters who responded to the Rayism of Larionov. To the ‘Target’ exhibition he also contributed a suite of more than thirty children’s drawings from his own collection. Shevchenko enlisted in the army in 1914 and demobilised in 1917. After the Revolution he continued to exhibit, firstly with the Knave of Diamonds in Moscow in November 1917; the World of Art in December 1917 and at the First Exhibition of Works of the Professional Union of Artists in 1918. He taught at the Vkhutemas or Vkhutein in Moscow from 1918-1929 and served under Tatlin on the Moscow Collegium of IZO Narkompros in 1919. Shevchenko was a member of the committee to preserve monuments and the artistic heritage 1918-1921. He exhibited together with A. Grishchenko in the Twelfth State Exhibition: Colourdynamo and Tectonic Primitivism in Moscow in 1919, signing a Manifesto in the catalogue and a text on Tectonic Primitivism in which he declared that easel painting is not dead, is not decoration, is not applied art and concluded ‘Long live easel painting!’. He appeared on the April 1919 list of artists for acquisitions by the envisaged Museum of Painterly Culture and was represented along with Kandinsky, Chagall and others at the First State Exhibition of Paintings by Local and Moscow Artists, held in Vitebsk in December 1919. He was also represented at the Nineteenth Exhibition of the All- Russian Exhibitions Bureau in Moscow in 1920, at the enormous First State Exhibition of Art and Science, which included ethnographic material, held in Kazan in 1920, at the 1921 exhibition of the World of Art in Moscow and at the First Russian Art Exhibition in Berlin in 1922. He was a member of the Makovets from 1922-1925 and exhibited at the third and last exhibition in Moscow 1925-1926. He contributed to the third Exhibition of Paintings by Artists from Kaluga and Moscow held in Kaluga in 1925 and to the seventh exhibition of the group L’Araignee (The Spider) at the Galerie Devambe in Paris in 1925. He was included in the 1928 exhibition of Acquisitions by the State Art Collections Fund held in Moscow. Shevchenko was a member of the Society of Russian Artists 1928-1929. In 1930 he was leader of the Painters Workshop Society founded in 1926 in Moscow. He was represented at the Jubilee exhibition Artists of the RSFSR over 15 years held at the Russian Museum, Leningrad in 1932. Shevchenko died in Moscow in 1948. This charming early watercolour shows the influences he gained when he arrived in Paris. And dates from 1905-1906.
