Provenance: Bourgeault-Horan Antiquarians, Sale August 21, 2005 lot 928, USA Quester Gallery, USA Private Collection, USA, Bradbury Art and Antiques, USA Elisha Taylor Baker 1827 - 1890 Elisha Taylor Baker was a distinguished marine painter known for his meticulous depictions of ships, yachts, and steamboats. Born in New York, Baker worked with his family in the whaling ports of Connecticut before deciding to become an artist. He established a studio in New York City in 1868 and traveled throughout New England, painting its choppy seacoasts, quiet rivers, and sunlit harbors. His best paintings feature luminous effects culled from the work of marine painters like Fitz Hugh Lane and William Bradford. Baker’s paintings can now be seen in the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art, the Mystic Seaport Museum, and the Mariners Museum in Virginia, among other institutions. The Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club was founded (as the "Seawanhaka Yacht Club") in September 1871 aboard the sloop Glance, anchored off Centre Island. Glance's captain, William L. Swan, was elected Seawanhaka's first Commodore. Charles E. Willis became the Vice Commodore, Frederic de P. Foster assigned as the first Secretary, Gerard Beekmanthe Treasurer and William Foulke as the Measurers. For many years, club meetings were held aboard this flagship. In the 1880s the Club maintained a clubhouse and anchorage at Stapleton, Staten Island near the clubhouse of the New York Yacht Club. On February 1, 1887, it was incorporated under the latter name. In 1881 Seawanhaka held Cup races from the New York harbor to Sandy Hook, NJ.
