About the Item

A keen eye for detail and a commanding use of color distinguish this beautiful oil on canvas by Marcel Brunery. A Sweet Indulgence depicts two jovial cardinals treat themselves to sweet cakes, tea and wine amongst lavish surroundings. Brunery was known for his cardinal and historical scenes, which imparted a tremendous amount of precision. From the flowing crimson and lavender robes to the brilliant parquetry floor, Brunery proves to be one of the finest genre artists of the 20th century.
Marcel Brunery was born in Paris to a family of artists, namely his father, the famed François Brunery. The younger Brunery followed in his father’s footsteps, excelling in the portrayal of cardinals at leisure. With a remarkable level of exactness, the artist renders interiors, fabric textures and reflections with an almost photographic accuracy.
