About
Informal abstract modernist painting signed by German artist Walter Wohlschlegel (1907-1999). Painted in 1986, this piece is titled 'Hochsommer' (high summer) and is painted on canvas. Here Wohlschlegel creates an interesting color / color play, most notably, the flat block colors of pastel crème, pink, mint green and teal green, then overlapping thinned white, pale blue, brown, black and lilac. There is something almost 'Pop Art' about this composition and we really love his work.
Wohlschlegel painted from the 1930s right up until the late 1990s with only a short break to serve as a soldier in Greece during the Second World War. Two years after his return he moved to settle in Freiburg in south West Germany, close to the French boarder. During this time he moved to the informal style as seen here.
