About the Item

An exceptional Irish oil on panel Ppainting by well listed Dublin Artist William Sadler, complete with a later giltwood frame of exceptional quality and condition, early 19th century. This work is unsigned which was typical of this Artist. The Painting depicts a Harbor Scene with fishing boats, sailing craft and figures with a large Windmill in the distance, with billowing clouds above this impressive view. Condition: Superb condition, professionally lightly cleaned. Measures: Width (entire including frame) 15.5" (39cm). Height (entire including frames) 12.25" (31cm). Location: Dublin City, Ireland. Irish Landscape Painter and Illustrator William Sadler II was born in Dublin to an artistic family, around 1782. In addition to his favourite hobby of copying the narrative "action" paintings of Old Masters, he specialized in small-scale detailed works of landscape painting, executed in oils, containing a number of human subjects and typically several features of topographical or other interest, including crowds or military scenes. Most were painted on mahogany wood panels. Sadler exhibited his works with several artist societies in Dublin venues (1808-23), and afterwards showed at the Royal Hibernian Academy. He had two sons, both of whom became artists: William Sadler III (born around 1808), who went on to paint landscapes and other works in a similar style to Sadler senior, as well as a number of humerous sketches and caricatures; and Rupert Sadler (1810-92), who produced genre works and landscapes, and also exhibited at the RHA. Works by William Sadler II can command five figure sums at auction, and are represented in several public collections of Irish Paintings both in the Republic and further afield. Most Expensive Painting By William Sadler The auction record for a work by William Sadler was set in 2000, when his urban landscape painting, entitled A View of the Deputy Master's House at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, overlooking Phoenix Park, was sold at Christie's, in London, for £28,200.
