About the Item

Constant Montald became a famous Symbolist painter of allegoric and genre scenes, portraits, lansdcapes and still lives. His work is decorative and mainly monumental. From time to time he was active as a sculptor. He also designed mosaics, carpets and decorative panels. His work was mainly indebted to the Pre-Rafhaelites, Idealism, Symbolism, Esotericism and Art Nouveau. Although Montald had an absolute predilection for monumental art, the First World War made this impossible and 'forced' him to paint for example landscapes in Brabant and in the neighborhood of his villa near Brussels, and Symbolist gardens. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Ghent. Thanks to his extraordinary talent the city of Ghent, where he was born, granted the very young artist several scholarships in order to develop his skills in Paris (1885-1886). Winning the Prix de Rome in 1886 brought Montald even greater success in his native town. He made long study tours in Italy - where he lived until 1891 - Greece, Turkey and Egypt. From 1896 until 1932 he was professor in mural decorative painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Artists like René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Jan De Cooman and Edgard Tytgat became studied under Montald. He was a member of the Brussels group of artists Pour lâ??Art (1890) and of the Académie Royale de Belgique (1894). That same year he participated in Brussels with Jean Delville, Auguste Donnay and Léon Frédéric at the exhibition organized by a group of esoteric artists. Together with the painters Jean Delville, Emile Fabry, Albert Ciamberlani, Emile Vloors and Omer Dierickx, he became the co-founder of L'Art Monumental (1920) in order to promote decorative, monumental art in association with architecture. In 1909 the Villa Montald was built (Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe) and became very quickly an important meeting place for the artistic and intellectual fine fleur of artists such as C. Doudelet, Stefan Zweig and Emile Verhaeren. The latter he had met in 1898 in the studio of sculptor Charles Van Der Stappen and he became a close friend.
