Anita O’Day, one of the great all-time improvisers among jazz singers, swung as hard as she lived. She earned her reputation with the band of drummer Gene Krupa in the early 1940s, made enduring recordings for Verve Records in the 1950s and 1960s, recorded for her own label over the next 15 years, and limped into her seventies performing after a stroke before giving it up in 2006.
