ANTIQUE ViCTORIAN VIOLINISTS PHOTO & PERIOD FRAME CASED INSIDE DISPLAY CASE

About the Item

Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this lovely, one of a kind Victorian photo of two young violinist girls in a period gilt frame which has been cased and protected in a secondary case with the original maker label to the back This is a very special and highly decorative piece, it really does give you a window into another time which is what great art should do, I love the setting, clothes and expressions, so timelessly Victorian! The condition is very good, there is some patina ware to the gilt frame and the outer case but otherwise its in fine order The makers label to the back reads as follows MANUFACTURED JOHN FROST CARVER, GILDER, & PRINTSELLER, AND WHOLESALE & RETAIL ARTISTS COLOURMAN 12 CLARE STREET BRISTOL SOLE AGENT FOR MINTORN’S MATERIALS FOR WAX FLOWERS ARCHITECTS, ENGINEERS, & C., SUPPLIED WITH DRAWERING AND TRACING PAPERS AND OTHER MATERIALS AT WHOLESALE After a little research online I found this clipping Frost & Reed is one of the UK’s oldest dealerships having been established by William Hill in Bristol in 1808. Over fifty years later in 1859 the business was sold to John Frost who listed his activities as a 'Carver, Gilder, Print Seller, Wholesale and Retail Artists Colourman and Drawing Paper Depot.' Frost was obviously well regarded as he was the holder of Queen Victoria’s Royal Warrant as Carver & Guilder to Her Majesty. After Frost’s demise in 1875 his position was taken by his nephew Walter Frost and his new partner William Reed and in 1881 the name of Frost & Reed formally came into being. The company originally dealt in prints, mezzotints, etching and engravings and in 1908 they decided to broaden their horizons by opening in the capital. They initially opened in St. James’ and have, despite several moves through expansion and enemy bomb damage during World War II, remained in London’s West End. By the millennium they were based next door to world renowned auctioneers Christies. Since 1884 the company has traded in the USA and Canada through art fairs and exhibitions and in 2002 an elegant showroom was opened in New York’s Madison Avenue. In 2006 following a major revamping of the London showroom Frost & Reed Contemporary was opened within the existing London building. As its title suggests it handles work by 21st century artists. Over its 200 years of existence the variety of works sold by the Gallery has encompassed 18th century Masters like Constable and Gainsborough, through to Alfred Munnings and 20th century greats such as Picasso and Gustav Klimt. Over the next few paragraphs, I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as “Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator” under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well-established decorators Lenygon and Morant...
