About the Item

Set of four albumen silver prints of Bertel Thorvaldsen's ''Cupid's Reign over the Four Elements'' by John G. Unnevehr (Danish/American 1822-1893), albumen prints. These images of Thorvaldsen's original marble reliefs are a joy to behold. Full of artistry and whimsy. Round prints matted and framed under glass, in simple gilt wood frames. Dated 1871. One cupid riding a dolphin, one flying on an eagle, one walking with a lion and my favorite, the one riding Cerberus, the hound of Hades, the multi-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld to prevent the dead from leaving. These are truly charming and evocative images. Remounted and re-matted on archival card, with UV resistant plexiglass. Cupid at Sea Cupid in Heaven Cupid in the Underworld Cupid on Earth 1871 Medium: Albumen silver print Lower center, printed: "Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1871, by J.G. Unnevehr, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington".
