About the Item

Original Kinetic, feminist graphic artwork by Carolee Schneemann has a hand-written story written around a large image of a group seated at a table that is surrounded by and layered with translucent vibrant colors of purple, yellow, green, pink and salmon. Limited edition artwork, numbered 249/250 and featuring a clear pencil signature and date indicating that this piece was produced in 1979; the height of the era in which Schneemann is recognized for her groundbreaking artistic innovations, positioning her own body within her work and performing the roles of both image and image-maker in performance, film, and installation. The currently running MOMA exhibit sites Carolee Schneemann as one of the most influential artists of the second part of the 20th century; stating that Schneemann’s pioneering investigations into subjectivity, the social construction of the female body, and the cultural biases of art history have had significant influence on subsequent generations of artists. Carolee Schneemann's own website credits the artist for transform(ing) the definition of art, especially discourse on the body, sexuality, and gender. It list her exhibitions as including works shown at Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Modern Art, NYC; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. With film and video retrospectives at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, NY; National Film Theatre, London; Whitney Museum, NY; San Francisco Cinematheque; Anthology Film Archives, NYC. This is one of four artworks that we are currently offering for sale by Carolee Schneemann. We acquired this image in 2006 from a private collector who had it stored for decades. Colors are bright, signature is clear. It is in good condition with a one inch repaired tear on the border edge, this item as been professionally cleaned, and recently mounted on linen.
