Large Format B/W Photograph 'Versailles Garden Sculpture' by David Armstrong

About the Item

Large format poetic black and white photograph of a Versailles garden sculpture / cherub, circa 1995 by the "Boston School" artist, David Armstrong (1954-2014). Gelatin silver print, 1 of an edition of 3. Signed on verso. Framed. Provenance: Mathew Marks Gallery, New York, NY. Armstrong is known for his portraits of gay men, tranvestites, drug addicts, fashion models and artists. "Mr. Armstrong’s photographs were often linked to what was known as the Boston School, a group of photographers who captured the world of social outsiders from the inside, usually in portrayals of their own friends and lovers. All were 1970s graduates of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and included Mark Morrisroe, Jack Pierson, Philip-Lorca diCorcia and, most notably, Nan Goldin, a friend of Mr. Armstrong’s since they were 14-year-old classmates in high school. Mr. Armstrong was considered the group’s least flamboyant member, and in some ways he was its most elusive. He was known for both technical perfectionism and emotional rawness, and acclaimed for the eye-of-the-hurricane stillness he brought to photos that he made amid mayhem. His ability to capture intimacy in unusual settings led fashion designers to seek him out later in his career, looking for comparable treatment of models in the hubbub of the high-fashion scene. Mr. Armstrong chronicled the sexually promiscuous and drug-addled New York underground scene of the 1970s and 1980s in “Night & Day,” a collection published in 2012. He had covered roughly the same period in his first book, "A Double Life,” a project with Ms. Goldin published in 1994. In the style of a family album, it presented photos by both artists without narrative text. His other books include “The Silver Cord” (1997), a critically acclaimed collection of portraiture and abstract landscapes; “All Day Every Day” (2002), a selection of his misty landscapes in saturated colors; and “615 Jefferson Avenue” (2011), featuring a gallery of black-and-white portraits of male models. The title of that book was the address of his home and studio in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn." Paul Vitello, NYT. October 31, 2014.
