Joseph Raffael (NYC, 1933-2021), Surrealist Portrait of a Woman, collaged magazine photographs assembled on cardboard, pencil signed lower margins, matted and wood slat framed under glass, 13.5"h x 10.5"w (image), 26.5"h x 19"w (frame).
This early collage work by Joseph Raffael was likely form his first solo show at the legendary Stable Gallery, NYC in 1965. For the first few years of his career Raffael focused on satirical collage, part of an emerging group of pop photography imagists including Chuck Close and Peter Hujar. Raffael went on to a distinguished career as a dazzling watercolorist of flora and sea life.
