"Johnson for Vice President. Leadership for the 60's" Vintage Campaign Poster

About the Item

This is an original 1960 "Johnson for Vice President" campaign poster. This poster was an iconic part of Kennedy and Johnson’s campaign in 1960. The poster featured a black and white photographic portrait of Lyndon B. Johnson, set against a red, white, and blue background. At top and bottom, the campaign's slogan, "JOHNSON FOR VICE PRESIDENT/ LEADERSHIP FOR THE 60's," is printed in block letters. An offset lithograph, this poster was published by the Democratic National Committee, Washington DC. At the Democratic convention in 1960, Johnson lost the presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy on the first ballot, 809 votes to 409. He then accepted Kennedy’s invitation to join the Democratic ticket as the vice presidential candidate. Overcoming his disappointment at not heading the ticket himself, he campaigned energetically, and many observers felt that without his presence Kennedy could not have carried Texas, Louisiana, and the Carolinas, states that were essential to his victory over the Republican candidate, Richard M. Nixon. After a very close race and despite his young age, Kennedy was elected as the 35th American President of the United States and Johnson was elected as the 37th Vice President. CONDITION: The poster is in good condition. Offset lithograph, printed in red, blue, and black. Color is vibrant. Paper is healthy. "Wear the 'FIGHTIN'EST' wings in the service" Vintage WWII Marine Poster, 1942
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is an original World War II Marines recruitment poster from 1942. The poster, a color lithograph, was printed by the Alpha Litho. Co., out of Camden, NJ. In the center of the composition appears a striking blue eagle, which tears apart a Japanese plane with its talons. The poster displays the slogan "Wear the FIGHTINEST wings in the service, Fly with the Marines" in bold letters above and below the image. On the bottom in black lettering is the phrase: "Apply, or write, to nearest recruiting station." The Marines logo appears in yellow in the top right hand corner of the composition, set against a red background. The Second World War ushered in the biggest government-led advertising campaign to date, critical to the wartime communication needs of every combatant: from raising money, recruiting soldiers and boosting volunteer efforts, to spurring production and provoking outrage at enemy atrocities. The Office of War Information (OWI) commissioned some of the nation’s leading artists to produce the stark, colorful graphic designs. The posters played to the fears, frustrations, and faith in freedoms that lingered in people's minds during the war. The most common themes found in the posters were the consequences of careless talk, supporting the war effort at home through conservation, victory gardens, and the purchasing of War Bonds, and anti-German and Japanese propaganda...

"A Yank in the R.A.F." Vintage Movie Poster, Circa 1941
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This colorful lithographic poster depicts the popular 1941 film A Yank in the R.A.F., directed by Henry King and produced by Twentieth Century-Fox. The black-and-white film describes a story that takes place early during World War II, in which a young American man, Baker, joins the British Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) in a time when the United States was still enforcing the Neutrality Acts. The British R.A.F. advertised for assistance during 1940, and a total of 271 American citizens joined during the years of 1940 and 1942. These volunteer American soldiers became known as the Eagle Squadron. Center in the composition, the title of the film is listed in bright yellow lettering. The details of the film’s actors, producers, screenplay author, and director are listed above and below the title. The film detailed various propagandistic notions of war, with Grable portrayed in the famous ‘pinup’ role. This poster was created to promote the film, and to promote underlying themes of American nationalism. "A Yank in the R.A.F" was the fourth most popular movie in the U.S. box office during the year of its release. While originally created as a light-hearted look at war, the film’s themes resonated with many Americans during its time. Support for the American military is emphasized by the icon “Let’s Go! U.S.A Keep ‘Em Flying...
