Printed by Imprimerie Chaix (Ateliers Chéret). It has been professionally matted and frames for conservation. Image size only is 48" x 33 1/2". Frames it is 43" x 57". Purchased at Merrill Chase in Chicago Information below from Rue Marcellin: This is arguably the very first film poster in history. In 1892 Emile Reynaud used his invention of the “Théâtre Optique” to project in public the first animated film in history at the Musée Grevin in Paris. Reynaud’s hand-drawn sequences predated the moving pictures of Lumiere by three years, and the first public screening of Edison’s Vitascope by four. Between 1892 and 1900, there were 12,800 performances attended by more than 500,000 customers. However, regular motion pictures, perfected by others, eventually left him in virtual obscurity and forgotten in history. From Mutual Art: Jules Cherèt (1836 - 1932) is considered the father of the modern poster. As a lithographer, printer, graphic artist, painter, decorator and illustrator, he is a prominent figure of the Parisian artistic and literary circles at the threshold of 19 the 20thCentury. Using the color lithograph Cheret developed the promotional poster for an art form and helped with its enormous production of color posters for the transformation of the urban appearance of the art capital, Paris. The liberalization of the press, the expansion of the rail network and the expansion of economic and trade led to the end of the nineteenth century to a large demand for posters and illustrations. Jules Cherèt was dedicated to all areas of economic life, the circus and café-concerts to exhibitions to fashion clothing and cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and the press. His extraordinary poster designs won him the nickname "Boulevard of Tiepolo." This retrospective devoted Chéret focuses on his career as a poster artist, but also illuminates next to his lesser known side as a painter and decorator. It deals with the question of Cheret's style that stands in the tradition of the Rococo, but also has the first elements of modernity, should be fascinated by the Impressionists such as Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec. Based on an extensive selection from his oeuvre is the career that traced the history of poster art for seminal and vital artist. Furniture, painted decorations, wall graphics, cartoons for tapestries, portraits and drawings can be found in the exhibition as well as theater and circus posters, advertising posters, book covers, promotional cards and programs.
