New York Recorder Poster, Christmas Edition, Original Vintage Lithograph, 1893

About the Item

The New York Recorder was a newspaper that was published in New York City during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was one of many papers that served the New York metropolitan area during a time when newspapers were a primary source of news and information for the public. During its time, newspapers like the Recorder would have been a key source for local, national, and international news, as well as for advertising various products and services, much like the ones seen in the colorful advertisement poster for sale here. This poster mentions "The International and Christmas Recorder," suggests a special edition of the newspaper, possibly an international edition or one that was published around the Christmas period. Special editions were often more elaborate and included extensive coverage of specific themes or events, which would have been an attractive feature for readers and advertisers alike. Newspapers from this period often had elaborate and visually striking advertising, as seen in the poster, which served as a significant revenue source for them. The rich illustrations and typography reflect the artistic and commercial style of the late 19th century, aimed at capturing the attention of readers and promoting a range of services and products. This is a vibrant and historically rich advertisement poster, likely from around 1893 and "The International and Christmas Recorder", was a special edition of the The New York Recorder. The poster features various American railway lines like the "Erie Lines" and "Royal Blue Line Trains," as well as the "American Line" and "Red Star Line" for transatlantic steamship travel. The artwork is in the style of late 19th-century advertising, with elaborate typography and detailed illustrations characteristic of the period. The poster also advertises "Scott's Emulsion," a cod liver oil-based product that was commonly used at the time as a remedy for a variety of health issues, such as coughs, colds, weak lungs, and scrofula. The use of such a health product in conjunction with travel services suggests a comprehensive approach to catering to the needs of the public, emphasizing well-being alongside the excitement of travel. Items like this poster are not only collectible for their aesthetic appeal but also for their historical value, providing insight into the culture, technology, and commerce of the era. It would be a significant piece for collectors interested in the history of advertising, travel, or medicinal products of the late 19th century. This print exhibits several signs of age and handling, including numerous fold marks and creases that are indicative of its history and past use. There is a minor section of the paper missing, fortunately situated in the margin and not affecting the image itself. Supplementary images provide a closer examination of the areas with faults. The surface of the print shows some textural character, with a few ripples and a pair of small, tawny discolored spots near the upper section. Despite the delicate nature of the substrate, the inks have retained their vibrancy, presenting a lively and visually compelling palette. This piece's unique charm and scarcity make it a prime candidate for preservation behind glass, where it would be a striking addition to any collection or decor. More scans on request.
