Original Memphis Poster for Chicago City Store, 1983 by Chris Garland

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

Details: Rare Poster. This limited edition version is an exclusive offering directly from archives of the designer, Chris Garland. Ten examples are available from the original (1983 printed) limited edition with the CITY logo silkscreened in phosphorescent ink, hand-signed at bottom in black marker by the designer. The original poster was printed in a total press run of 500, and only 50 of these silkscreened versions with phosphorescent ink were ever produced, and only 10 ever signed. Must ship flat, unframed.

CITY store was waiting for publicity photos to arrive from the Memphis studio in Milan...to promote the Memphis Collection at a for-the-trade open house event in conjunction with Neocon/Chicago. The photos never arrived. Chris Garland of Xeno Design was asked to create a poster without product images and have it printed and delivered in one week. As a concept, he chose to stylize the Chicago Picasso sculpture with a Memphis-like appearance. In collaboration with illustrator David Csicsko, work began on Friday and mechanical art was delivered to the printer Monday. The image is not a drawing; it's all hand cut overlays - one for each color of ink. No proof was made in advance of going on press. Delivery was made later that week.
The CITY event was a hit with a number of the designers from the Memphis/Milano group showing up unexpectedly. Posters were carried back to Milan and put on display in their studios.
