"Philadelphia" Vintage American Airlines Travel Poster, circa 1960s
About the Item
This is an original American Airlines travel poster from the 1960s advertising Philadelphia as one of their alluring destinations. The poster boldly displays the Independence Hall, with a flowing American flag behind and around it. Originally issued in two sizes, the iconic poster design shown here is the larger version.
American Airlines is a major airline that was founded in 1926 as a union of more than eighty airlines. They still continue to operate today out of ten major hubs in the United States and remain as a major airline for both national and international flights. It is the world’s largest airline when measured by fleet size, revenue, passengers carried and destinations served.
Independence Hall is a public building in Philadelphia, PA. Construction began in 1732. When it was completed in 1756, it served as the Pennsylvania State House. Some of the most important events of early American history took place there. The Declaration of Independence was debated and ratified within its walls on July 4, 1776. In 1781, the Articles of Confederation were ratified there as well.
From May to September of 1787, the Constitutional Convention was held in Independence Hall. The Convention was held to revise the Articles of Confederation. During that summer, the delegates to the Convention eventually drafted the United States Constitution. Within Independence Hall’s Assembly Room, the Constitution was debated, ratified, and signed on September 17, 1787. The individuals who gathered in the Assembly Room over the years were famous leaders in U.S. history: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington, among many others.
This image of the Independence Hall in Philadelphia was meant to entice passengers and tourists during a swell of patriotism after World War II.

"A Yank in the R.A.F." Vintage Movie Poster, Circa 1941
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This colorful lithographic poster depicts the popular 1941 film A Yank in the R.A.F., directed by Henry King and produced by Twentieth Century-Fox. The black-and-white film describes a story that takes place early during World War II, in which a young American man, Baker, joins the British Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) in a time when the United States was still enforcing the Neutrality Acts. The British R.A.F. advertised for assistance during 1940, and a total of 271 American citizens joined during the years of 1940 and 1942. These volunteer American soldiers became known as the Eagle Squadron.
Center in the composition, the title of the film is listed in bright yellow lettering. The details of the film’s actors, producers, screenplay author, and director are listed above and below the title. The film detailed various propagandistic notions of war, with Grable portrayed in the famous ‘pinup’ role. This poster was created to promote the film, and to promote underlying themes of American nationalism. "A Yank in the R.A.F" was the fourth most popular movie in the U.S. box office during the year of its release. While originally created as a light-hearted look at war, the film’s themes resonated with many Americans during its time. Support for the American military is emphasized by the icon “Let’s Go! U.S.A Keep ‘Em Flying...

Trans World Airlines (TWA) was a major airline in the United States that operated from 1930 until it was acquired by American Airlines in 2001. It was formed as Transcontinental & Western Air to operate a route from New York City to Los Angeles, soon followed by multiple National routes. Howard Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939, and after World War II led the expansion of the airline to serve Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, making TWA a second unofficial flag carrier of the United States after Pan Am.
David Klein (1918 – 2005) was an American artist, best known for his influential work in advertising. Although he produced illustrations for Broadway theatrical productions, Hollywood films, the United States Army, and numerous corporate clients, Klein is best remembered for the iconic travel images he created for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines (TWA). Between approximately 1955–1965, Klein designed numerous award-winning travel advertisement posters, the bulk for TWA, many of which are now considered emblematic of the 1960s Jet Age.
