About the Item
Very Rare Original Vintage Poster-Steinlen-Coffee Chocolate Tea-Cat, 1895
In this family-friendly lithograph for the chocolate and tea company Compagnie Française des Chocolats et Thés Steinlen has portrayed a homely scene in which the artist brings together his loved ones: his wife Emilie, his daughter Colette and one of the countless cats he has collected, drew and painted throughout his life.
Colette had already served as a model in 1894 for the Sterilized Milk of the Vingeanne poster by the printer Charles Verneau. It became one of the most appreciated and sought after posters by collectors. Steinlen used his daughter's face again to portray the young woman of the Comiot Motorcycles poster in 1899.
The warm atmosphere of the poster is enhanced by the colours used by the artist who focuses the viewer's attention on the girl's face. She is defending her bowl of chocolate from the cat perched on the table.
It was Steinlen’s love for cats that designated him to paint the poster that became a true icon for Paris and Montmartre: the Black Cat Cabaret of Rodolphe Salis. Introduced to Salis by Aristide Bruant, Toulouse-Lautrec and Willette, Steinlen was a regular visitor upon his arrival in Paris, from 1882 to 1887. Later he preferred family life, unlike many artists of the bohemian Paris. (Source Digital Library of Lyon)
The chocolate factory of the Compagnie Française des Chocolats et des Thés was founded in 1871 in Strasbourg. It later became the property of the Schall Company.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen
Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was born in Lausanne in 1859. He was naturalized French in 1901. He was a painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist and sculptor. Before settling in Paris, he made a detour to Mulhouse where one of his uncles placed him in the studio of one of the best lithographers of the time. He settled definitively in Montmartre in 1881. Willette introduced him to his companions of the Cabaret du Chat-Noir animated by Rodolphe Salis. He met Toulouse-Lautrec, Forain, Léandre, Debussy, Eric Satie, Verlaine, Alphonse Allais and Aristide Bruant. He took part in the performances of the famous cabaret's shadow theater with animal stories and, most often, sequences featuring cats, for which he has a particular affection. The felines will appear throughout his activity as "parentheses" in a tormented work. There is, in this torment, the expression of no personal problem but a painful compassion for the lives of the exploited and marginal beings. He painted and drew idylls, balls and bastrings, workers, kids and gosselin, the poor, the little workers, girls and marlous. He sometimes made posters. In the most successful of them (« Le lait pur de la Vingeanne » et le « Fer Bravais ») he imposed, relevant or not, the presence of cats.
In 1901, Steinlen worked for L'Assiette au beurre , the most virulent satirical newspaper ever published and takes readily to target the institutions of the 3rd Republic.
His works are found in numerous Public Collections, such as Petit Palais in Geneva, Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Advertising poster for Poulain Chocolates produced by Firmin Bouisset circa 1898.
Chocolat Poulain is a French company producing chocolate since its foundation in February 1848 by Victor-Auguste Poulain, confectioner in Blois. The horse/foal is the emblem of the company.
Firmin Bouisset chose here to represent the brand by a Pierrot holding a chocolate bar in his hand. Pierrot's traditional tears have been replaced with chocolate smeared all over his face. The Pierrot is known for his naivety but also and above all for being trustworthy, and that's probably what Bouisset wanted to highlight here: you can eat Chocolat Poulain with your eyes closed.
Firmin Bouisset, born September 2, 1859 in Moissac and died March 19, 1925 in Paris, is a French illustrator, lithographer and poster artist.
He was received at the School of Fine Arts in March 1880 in the class of Alexandre Cabanel, and exhibited two paintings the same year at the Salon.
He became known especially for his advertising posters, including the small schoolboy LU biscuits, paper cigarette JOB, and the girl's chocolate Menier...
